Your wedding day is one of the most important days of your life and the last thing you want is a runny nose and itchy, bloodshot eyes. But it’s a sad fact of life; fresh flowers trigger pollen allergies in hundreds and thousands of people worldwide.

So what happens if you’re both an allergy sufferer and a bride-to-be planning the wedding of your dreams? Simple! Fake it with silk flowers; the perfect, sneeze-free alternative. Here are a few more reasons why artificial flowers can make your day, and your wedding:

Affordable chic

Not only are today’s silk flowers incredibly authentic but as opposed to fresh flowers, they’re less expensive, leaving you with more money left over for the honeymoon.

More time. Less stress.

Because there’s no danger of your silk wedding flowers wilting or drooping, you can order them well in advance, leaving the precious few days before your wedding free for other last minute items like bridesmaids’ gifts or wedding favors.

Ditch the medication

No-one wants to worry about popping pills on their wedding day. With artificial wedding flowers, instead of dosing up, you’ll be wide awake and allergy-free.

• Love the longevity

Once you’ve enjoyed them at the wedding, you can repurpose your silk flower arrangements as long-lasting mementos. Attach them to the favors or use them to decorate your wedding album.

If you suffer from pollen allergies, now you can enjoy your wedding day without the scratchy throat or having to carrying tissues around wherever you go. So the only tears will be tears of joy. Come to think of it, you may want to keep those tissues after all.

Whether you want to avoid flower allergies or simply make the wedding-planning a little less stressful, visit our pollen-free store to see our wide selection of silk flowers.

Better Hair Days

Monday, July 19th, 2010

A few months ago, we shared ways to repurpose your silk flowers as items such as unique drawer handles and delightful cake embellishments. Here, we talk more about how silk flower hair accessories can make a difference to your hair and your life.

We all know the feeling. We press snooze a few times too many and don’t have time to straighten, curl, or groom our tresses in the usual way, but we still need to look polished for that client meeting, right? That is where just one little silk flower can become the ultimate fashion weapon.

By simply stitching your chosen silk floral to a bobby pin, even the most tousled of chignons or ponytails can look striking. The accessorizing potential is endless – the toughest part is choosing the color! Try pairing a vibrant gerbera with a pastel outfit, or a bright, white hibiscus with more neutral tones.

Transforming your bed hair into a work of art with an artificial flower takes just a few moments so in addition to the added style factor, the time-saving benefits mean you could plan on spending a little more time under the covers, even on important meeting days!

So, keeping a few artificial flowers in your beauty arsenal really can mean the difference between looking sloppy and looking chic. This simple way to achieve a classic look is something you’ll keep turning to, time and time again, in the battle against ‘just rolled out of bed’ hair.

As opposed to real flowers, silk flowers will never wilt or fade. So whether you want to secure bangs or revive a tired hairstyle, head to the 5,000 ft Floral & Hearty showroom to choose your favorites from our huge selection. Get as creative as you like and don’t be afraid to try different things until you find a look that suits you.

Heaven Scent Silks

Wednesday, July 7th, 2010

Ok, so we know silk florals look real and we know they feel real. But how do your artificial flowers stand the test of smell? Here are five simple ways to convince even the most suspicious of guests.

1. Essential Oils

Sprinkle a few drops of an essential oil or burning oil onto the underside of your silk flowers or onto the stems, being careful not to stain the petals. If you are looking to replicate the scent of real flowers, be sure to pick a believable scent. Tea tree oil, for example, is a far cry from the real scent of a gerbera. Vanilla, on the other hand, blends nicely with any silk flower arrangement.

2. Perfume

A quick spritz of your favorite perfume could work wonders on an artificial orchid. Also try perfume that you might be bored of using on yourself – it could compliment your artificial flowers more than you expect.

3. Air Freshener

Air fresheners can really liven up silk arrangements. Again, this could stain petals so be careful to apply to the underside only. Of course, a floral scent would be more believable than ‘Ocean Breeze’.

4. Fabric Freshener

Silk flowers are made of fabric after all. If you’re already spraying your curtains and your sofa, perhaps spraying the silk centerpiece wouldn’t be that crazy.

5. Scented Candles

Setting a scented candle near a silk bouquet is a great way to add scent to your silks without spraying them directly. It will last a long time and the candle doesn’t even have to be lit to smell divine.

Of course, not all real flowers carry a strong scent these days so if your chosen scent or oil does wear off a little with time, your secret is still safe.

Has the pump on your bathroom soap dispenser ever developed rust? Other than soaking it in WD40 and scrubbing it with a metal scourer on a daily basis, there’s really no saving the poor little pump. But that doesn’t mean you should discard the container, too. Instead of sending it to soap dispenser graveyard, why not repurpose it as an unusual vase for your silk flower arrangement?

A bunch of short-stemmed artificial peonies brought into a tight bouquet would look both delicate and delightful in the small receptacle. Or a few long-stemmed silk gerbera daisies could provide a modern edge to your bathroom.

Here are some more unique vase ideas for your faux flowers…

Pitchers. Use your favorite glass or china pitcher to display a big bunch of artificial shrubs or tall blades of silk grass.

Bottles. Interesting wine or water bottles come in beautiful colors and shapes these days. These also look great in clusters if you have a collection of them.

Jam jars. The next time you reach for one of these at your local supermarket, take a look at the jar itself and imagine it clean and empty. Remember that the money you spend will be doing double duty later on.

A fishbowl (minus the fish!). You can even add some colorful touches such as artificial fruit to the bowl to create an eye-catching silk floral centerpiece.

Condiment bottles. Olive oil/ balsamic vinegar bottles will look extra edgy if you keep them in their carry case.

Old perfume bottles. Not only will these look divine, they also hold their scent so that the silk flowers will smell good, too.

But don’t stop there! The possibilities are endless and unlike vases for fresh flowers, they don’t need to hold water. Whatever receptacle you choose for your silk floral arrangement, have fun with it.

When Good Flowers Turn Bad

A Beautiful Fresh Flower Alternative

A Beautiful Fresh Flower Alternative

The Amorphophallus Titanum is one of the largest flowers in the world, native to the rain forests of Indonesia. Its nickname? ‘The Corpse Flower’ because of the putrid odor it emits which was once described as “a penetrating smell more repulsive than any buffalo carcass in an advanced stage of decomposition.”

Now, we’re not saying that the average forgotten and decaying bouquet smells quite that bad, but it’s pretty close. It’s just the sad truth about fresh flowers. If you don’t devote the time and energy it takes to maintain them, they will get stinky, which kind of defeats the purpose of having flowers to enjoy in the first place!

But if you have ever fallen victim to this foul-smelling old flower water, it’s not your fault. The all too familiar smell is the result of decaying foliage that remains in the water, growing smelly bacteria. We understand that changing the water, adding food, snipping the stems, amputating dead heads and removing foliage and fallen petals from fresh flowers on a daily basis is more work than anyone would want to do.

When you think about it, the act of flower-giving could in itself be seen as a little inconsiderate. “Congratulations / Happy Birthday! Here are some flowers to celebrate this special day. Now, please devote the next five to seven days making sure they don’t make your home smell like a corpse”. In the same way as buying somebody a puppy for Christmas, it could be seen as rather thoughtless.

Silk flowers on the other hand are self-sufficient. Just find a vase for your artificial flowers – which can be a fun task in itself- sit back and enjoy. And the best part? You can spritz silk floral bouquet

with your favorite perfume as often as you like, to enjoy for as long as you like- minus the corpse scent. Unless you have particularly bad taste in cologne, that is.

orange-daisycenterpieceIn a previous blog, we mentioned that you can save money on your silk floral arrangements by using your own vases or containers. If you are a hostess who loves creating one of a kind silk flower centerpieces for dinner parties and occasions, here are some unique containers you can pair with your faux flowers:

· For a fresh spring silk floral centerpiece, take a fish bowl and fill it with key limes, kumquats and water. Insert beautiful silk alstromeria, daffodils, lilies, or zinnias. This centerpiece is perfect to accompany a fresh spring menu of grilled fish and fresh vegetables.

· To go along with an Asian inspired menu, fill colorful take out containers (available in party stores) with a rock to ground it, then add Asian style grass, bamboo, cherry blossoms or even a silk orchid.

· For an unexpected centerpiece, you can fill any container with citrus fruit and insert short stemmed silk flowers, one flower per piece of fruit. Silk flowers are perfect for piercing the skin of the citrus fruit since the stems have a wire base. Our favorite example – accompany a beet-orange salad with orange chicken with the perfect silk floral centerpiece – a cake stand of oranges topped with daisies.

· For a backyard party or barbeque, create a rustic silk centerpiece contained in recycled tin cans.

Whatever your centerpiece needs, Floral & Hearty has the  to accommodate. Stop by our shop and check out our do it yourself department where you can stock up on all of the silk flowers and silk foliage you need to fulfill your perfect Martha Stewart hostess dreams!

1. Use One of Your Own Containers – By using a container you already own, you will eliminate the cost of purchasing a new container and can use the money saved to buy higher quality silk florals and/or have a trained designer create a customized arrangement just for you.

2. Keep it Real – Professional silk floral designers are able to guide you into making choices that are “botanically” correct. In other words, use the individual floral stems the way they grow naturally and don’t be “matchy-matchy.” You will get the most use from silk florals that compliment your area and not match it. When most people purchase fresh flowers they don’t even think about that there is red, orange, yellow and purple in the bouquet and if it matches their decor. They just see beautiful colors – the same should be true with silk flowers.

3. Time = Money – With silk florals, you are guaranteed to save time on cutting, watering, arranging, and cleaning up dead petals and leaves! Not to mention the time saved running back and forth to your florist and/or a home improvement store’s garden department.

As Eastern philosophies and exercise have begun to permeate our society, so too have eastern interior decorating principles such as feng shui.  Many people have heard of feng shui but have very little understanding of what it is or how it can help.

What is Feng Shui?

Feng shui is an ancient art and science developed in China over 3000 years ago. Although it is a complex topic, the general idea focuses on balancing the energies of a given space to assure the health and good fortune for people inhabiting it.

Feng Shui and Plants

Plants and flowers play a big role in the art of feng shui, and artificial flowers and plants are an acceptable option to fresh according to feng shui principles. Here are a few simple ways you can increase your feng shui with silk flowers and plants to improve your life:

  • Silk Plants in the office bring about good luck in your career.  Place your artificial plants in the east or south corners of your office for maximum luck.
  • Faux Plants and flowers should be used abundantly throughout the home for increased, balanced energy.
  • Small silk plants and artificial flowers are preferred for the bedroom. Because plants represent growth and vibrant life, large plants are not recommended for the area of the home designated for rest.
  • Plants that incorporate wood components are especially beneficial because wood represents creativity, birth, regeneration, and spring.
  • Pairs are considered beneficial also, so use pairings of silk plants to increase chi.

Plants and flowers represent life and bring abundant positive energy into a home. We invite you to stop in to visit our 5000 square foot showroom. You will immediately feel the positive vibes and get some great ideas for your home.

True Stories

Tuesday, March 16th, 2010

For those of you who don’t think Silk Flowers and Trees look real, here are some true stories from Floral & Hearty clients:

1. An interior designer had us install a 9 foot custom, hand-drilled silk tree in her client’s home. On a follow-up visit to the client’s home, she was shocked to discover that the client had her LANDSCAPER up on a ladder trimming the foliage so it would grow back a certain way in the room! Needless to say, the client had to buy a taller urn so the tree remained the correct height.

2. After delivering a new house warming gift for a client, I received a telephone call from the recipient. The conversation began, “I just love my orchid, but what was my daughter thinking?!?! I have no idea how to keep an orchid alive. Can you tell me the best way to take care of it?” My reply, “Just clean the glass every few weeks and wipe the leaves with a damp cloth if you see dust.” Her response, “Are you telling me this plant isn’t alive?”

3. A corporate client had one of our silk floral arrangements in a glass vase on her desk at work. She started noticing water stains on her papers and desk, but couldn’t understand where the water was coming from. She finally figured out that the cleaning people kept adding water to the vase to keep her flowers “alive!”

4. A client called us to tell us that a pot she bought was defective because the color was “bleeding” on her new flooring. After much debate and thought, we came to realize her cleaning people were watering the silk tree she purchased from us! The coloring was actually being created by water stains!

These are just a few examples that illustrate the quality of our silk floral arrangements and silk trees that we carry. One piece of advice – Make sure to tell anyone who does work in your home that your silk florals and trees are artificial! Stop by our Coral Springs showroom and see for yourself – you’ll be amazed!
